How branding actually works in Kenya in 2026
The Kenyan branding market is full of "logo designers" producing visual marks that won't survive the third quarter. Generic gradient logos, off-the-shelf typography choices, brand guidelines that consist of three colour swatches and nothing else. Then six months later the business expands, needs marketing collateral, and discovers the brand has no system to support growth — so they pay again to rebuild what should have been built right initially.
At Nelium we approach branding as system architecture, not graphic design. The deliverable isn't a logo file — it's a structured visual and verbal system that lets your business grow without reinventing its identity at every stage.
Strategy comes before visual design
Visual identity divorced from brand strategy is decoration. Before any pixels move, we run brand strategy work — competitive positioning, audience research, brand archetype, value proposition framing, voice principles. The visual identity then expresses the strategy. Skip this step and you end up with beautiful design that doesn't connect to a coherent business position.
Logo design is 10% of brand identity work
Most clients arrive thinking "we need a logo." What they actually need is a system: primary logo + variants (horizontal, stacked, icon-only), colour palette (primary, secondary, neutral, semantic), typography hierarchy (display, heading, body, UI), imagery style (photography direction, illustration approach), iconography rules, motion principles, and contextual application examples. We deliver all of it, not just the mark.
Brand guidelines are the multiplier
A brand without guidelines is a brand that gets diluted within 6 months as different freelancers, internal teams, and agencies interpret it differently. Our brand guidelines documents typically run 30–80 pages — usage rules, do's and don'ts, colour specifications in print and digital, type pairings, layout grids, voice examples, and platform-specific applications. Future agencies and team members can execute on-brand without redesigning the brand every project.
Brand systems must work across all the surfaces customers touch
Modern brands live across web, mobile apps, social media, packaging, signage, video, presentations, and physical experiences. A brand designed only for a logo on a business card breaks at every other touchpoint. We design with applications in mind from day one — testing the system in real contexts before signing off.
Local cultural context isn't optional
Kenyan brands operating in Kenyan markets need brand identities that resonate with Kenyan audiences. That doesn't mean acacia trees and Maasai shukas (please, no). It means understanding visual cultural signals — what feels modern vs colonial, what Swahili-language typography requires, what mobile-first design looks like for an audience that consumes brands primarily through Instagram and WhatsApp on Android phones.
How we structure branding engagements
Discovery and brand strategy (weeks 1–3)
Stakeholder interviews, audience research, competitive landscape, positioning workshops, voice and personality definition, brand strategy document. Output: written brand strategy that the visual identity will execute.
Visual identity development (weeks 3–7)
Concept exploration (3 directions), logo refinement, colour palette, typography selection, imagery direction, iconography development. Output: full visual identity system.
Application and guidelines (weeks 7–10)
Real-world application examples (business cards, social templates, web headers, packaging if applicable), brand guidelines document, asset packaging and delivery. Output: brand guidelines + complete asset library.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a logo and a brand?
A logo is a single visual mark. A brand is the entire visual and verbal system — logo, colour palette, typography, imagery style, voice, motion principles, and the rules that hold them together. Most Kenyan SMEs commission "a logo" from Fiverr and end up with no brand. We deliver brand systems, not logos.
How much should branding cost for a Kenyan SME?
Logo + basic guidelines (entry-level): KES 35,000–80,000. Full visual identity (logo, palette, typography, basic templates, basic guidelines): KES 120,000–280,000. Comprehensive brand system (research, strategy, identity, guidelines, full collateral suite, motion, brand book): KES 350,000–900,000+. Enterprise rebrands run substantially higher.
Will I own the source files?
Yes — fully. You receive editable Adobe Illustrator (.ai), Figma source files, all colour-mode variants, exported PNG/SVG/PDF for every asset, and full brand guidelines in PDF + editable formats. No proprietary lock-in, no monthly licensing.
Can you handle the printing or do I need to find a printer?
We design print-ready files (CMYK, proper bleeds, embedded fonts, packaged outputs) and coordinate with our trusted print partners in Nairobi for business cards, brochures, signage, and large-format jobs. You can use our partners or take files to your own printer.
How long does a branding project take?
Logo + identity refresh: 3–4 weeks. Full visual identity from scratch: 6–10 weeks. Comprehensive brand system with research and strategy: 10–16 weeks. Rush turnarounds possible at premium rates but rarely produce the strongest work.
