How website redesigns actually work in Kenya in 2026
Sixty percent of the web design work we take on in Kenya is redesigns. The pattern is consistent — a business commissioned a site 3–6 years ago, the original developer is unreachable, the site loads slowly on phones, looks dated next to competitors, doesn't rank, and is missing modern features (M-Pesa integration, WhatsApp click-to-chat, schema, mobile-friendly menus). The owner suspects "we need a new website" but is nervous about losing what little SEO traffic they currently get.
Done right, a redesign improves SEO rather than hurting it, retains every meaningful business outcome the old site was producing, and modernises the brand experience. Done wrong — and most are — a redesign destroys 6 years of SEO equity and has the business starting from zero on Google. Below is how we approach redesigns to ensure the first scenario, not the second.
Audit before redesign
The first deliverable on any redesign is an audit, not design comps. What pages drive traffic, leads, and revenue today? Which keywords are you ranking for? What's the URL structure? What technical SEO foundation exists or doesn't? Where are users dropping off in the funnel? Audit data prevents accidentally redesigning away the parts of your site that actually work.
URL mapping is the most underrated step
Every URL in the new site needs to either match an old URL or have a 301 redirect from the old. Skip this and you nuke 100% of your existing backlinks and Search Console rankings overnight. We build URL maps in a spreadsheet, validate them with the SEO team, implement redirects in the staging environment, and test rigorously before production launch.
Performance gains often outweigh design gains
The biggest measurable improvement most redesigned sites see isn't aesthetics — it's page-load time. A site that loaded in 6 seconds now loads in 1.8s. That alone improves Core Web Vitals scores, which improves rankings, which lifts traffic. The visual redesign feels nice but the performance redesign is what moves business outcomes.
Content gets revisited, not just retyped
Redesigns are an opportunity to revisit content. Pages that haven't been updated in 4 years, vague service descriptions, missing FAQ sections, no internal linking — all of these get addressed during redesign. We typically rewrite or substantially expand 30–60% of existing pages while preserving the URL structure.
Soft launch with monitoring beats hard launch with crossed fingers
We deploy redesigns initially to a subset of traffic (or to a staging URL with redirects from a subset of pages), monitor for issues, and fix before full cutover. Search Console submission of the new sitemap goes immediately on full launch. Rankings get monitored daily for 30 days post-launch — any drops get investigated and addressed quickly.
How we structure redesign engagements
Audit and strategy (weeks 1–3)
Analytics audit, SEO audit, technical audit, competitor benchmarking, content audit, URL inventory, redirect map, redesign brief.
Design (weeks 3–6)
Brand-aligned design exploration, mobile-first templates, design system, motion specs.
Development (weeks 6–10)
Theme rebuild, custom blocks, M-Pesa or other integration improvements, performance optimization, schema implementation, accessibility audit, redirect implementation.
Launch and monitoring (weeks 10+)
Content migration, redirect testing, soft launch, full launch, Search Console resubmission, 30-day rankings monitoring, fix iterations.

Frequently asked questions
Will I lose Google rankings during a redesign?
Not if it's done correctly. We map every existing URL pre-launch, set up 301 redirects for any URL changes, preserve metadata and schema, maintain content depth, and submit updated sitemaps to Search Console. Most clients see a 1–3 week traffic dip then recovery — followed by long-term improvement from performance gains.
How long does a redesign take?
Brochure-site redesign with similar scope to existing: 4–8 weeks. Full reorganisation with new IA, new content, new platform: 8–16 weeks. E-commerce redesign with checkout migration: 10–16 weeks. The redesign is faster than original builds because content already exists.
Do you migrate the content for me?
Yes. Content migration, image migration, URL mapping, redirect setup, metadata preservation, and post-launch QA. We don't hand you a "you migrate it yourself" stack — that's where most failed redesigns happen.
What if I just want a refresh, not a full redesign?
A refresh — keeping the structure but updating visual design, performance, and minor UX — typically runs KES 80,000–250,000 and takes 3–6 weeks. We propose refresh-first when full redesign isn't justified by the underlying problems. Saves you money and reduces risk.
How do you decide what to keep and what to change?
Analytics-driven. We pull the data on which existing pages produce traffic, leads, and revenue, and protect those at all costs during the redesign. Pages that don't produce anything become candidates for consolidation, removal, or rewriting. The result is a leaner site that ranks better and converts higher than the original.
