Find the search problems that suppress qualified demand—and turn the findings into an accountable growth plan.
An SEO audit should produce decisions, not a longer spreadsheet
An SEO audit determines whether search engines can discover, render, understand and select the right pages—and whether those pages help Nigerian prospects take a valuable next step. The useful output is not a list of every imperfect title or image. It is a prioritised implementation plan tied to visibility, qualified traffic and conversion.
Start by defining the site’s commercial model. A Lagos professional-services firm, a national ecommerce retailer and a multi-location healthcare provider require different evidence, architecture and conversion paths. Record priority services, products, locations, customer segments and current revenue routes before running a crawler.
Establish a baseline using Google Search Console, analytics, CRM or lead records, advertising landing pages and the content inventory. Note seasonality, migrations, redesigns, domain changes and major campaign dates. Without context, a graph can invite the wrong diagnosis.
Set audit scope and evidence standards
List every property in scope: main domain, subdomains, country or language folders, staging sites, applications, product feeds and important third-party booking or checkout journeys. Confirm which team owns each. An audit cannot protect assets nobody knew existed.
Use several evidence sources. Crawl data shows what a tool can reach; server logs reveal actual crawler requests; Search Console reports what Google observed; analytics shows user behaviour; and manual testing exposes rendering or conversion problems. No single source proves the entire search journey.
Classify findings by impact, confidence, effort, dependency and responsible owner. Separate verified faults from hypotheses requiring testing. A blocking noindex on revenue pages deserves immediate attention; rewriting a title already performing well may not.
Verify access, crawling and index selection
Check important URLs manually and at scale. Confirm expected HTTP status, redirect destination, robots directives, canonical declaration and presence in the XML sitemap. Look for accidental blocks introduced during development, pages returning soft errors, redirect chains and internal links pointing at obsolete versions.
Remember that robots.txt controls crawling, not necessarily removal from search. Page-level robots directives and X-Robots-Tag headers can control indexing when Google can access them. Review Google’s current specifications before changing rules, particularly for PDFs and other non-HTML files.
Compare sitemap URLs with the indexable canonical set. A sitemap should not become a warehouse for redirected, duplicate, blocked or error pages. Split very large inventories logically where that helps monitoring, and keep lastmod values meaningful rather than rewriting them without content change.
In Search Console, examine page-indexing patterns and inspect examples from each template. Google’s URL Inspection tool reports information about the indexed version, permits a live test of potential indexability and can show the Google-selected canonical. The live test is not a guarantee of indexing or ranking, so interpret it with crawl and site evidence.
Investigate duplicate selection. HTTP and HTTPS, www variants, trailing slashes, tracking parameters, filters, print pages and product variants can create competing URLs. Align internal links, redirects, canonicals, sitemaps and alternate annotations around the intended version.
Test rendering and JavaScript dependency
Compare the source HTML, rendered DOM and Google’s inspected view for representative templates. Essential headings, body content, links, product information, structured data and canonicals should not disappear when scripts fail or load slowly.
Check blocked resources, client-side redirects, infinite scroll and interactive elements that reveal content only after actions a crawler may not perform. Ensure paginated or load-more experiences expose stable URLs and crawlable links where discovery matters.
For Elementor pages, inspect the generated markup and frontend requests rather than assuming the visual editor’s appearance proves search accessibility. Remove unused widgets and scripts cautiously, test responsive behaviour and verify that optimisations do not break forms, menus or analytics.
Audit site architecture and internal linking
Map the path from the homepage and primary navigation to priority services, categories, products, guides and locations. Valuable pages should not depend on orphaned sitemap discovery. Record click depth as a diagnostic, then improve the hierarchy according to user need rather than chasing an arbitrary number.
Use descriptive internal links that explain the destination. Connect informational pages to relevant commercial solutions and supporting evidence. Avoid sitewide keyword-heavy links, huge tag archives and automated related-content blocks that create noise.
Check breadcrumbs, pagination, faceted navigation and filters. Ecommerce combinations can generate a near-infinite crawl space with little unique value. Decide which filters satisfy real search demand, build stable indexable pages for those, and control the remainder without blocking resources required for rendering.
Identify orphans, dead ends and pages with unusually high internal link volume. Consolidate competing pages only after checking their queries, backlinks, conversions and intended roles. Redirect removed URLs to a genuinely equivalent destination, not automatically to the homepage.
Evaluate search intent and content usefulness
Create a page-to-query map from Search Console and manual result analysis. Determine whether each important URL serves the searcher’s task: learning, comparing, finding a location, checking cost or selecting a provider. A page can contain the keyword yet fail because it answers the wrong stage.
Review headings, primary explanation, proof, examples, FAQs and next action. Remove generic market introductions that delay the answer. Add local detail only when it changes the decision: service coverage, Nigerian regulation, payment or delivery options, implementation realities and verified customer evidence.
Assess expertise and trust. Identify the responsible organisation or author, support factual claims, show revision dates where information changes and explain commercial relationships. Regulated topics require suitably qualified review. Avoid unsupported superlatives and invented statistics.
Detect overlap. If several pages target the same intent with little distinction, decide whether they should be consolidated, repositioned or kept for a valid segment. Do not merge solely because two pages share words; examine the result type and customer need.
Audit thin and stale content by value rather than word count alone. A short contact page can be complete, while a long guide can remain repetitive and unhelpful. Preserve URLs already earning relevant traffic when updating, and document redirect or canonical changes carefully.
Inspect page-level search presentation
Review unique titles and main headings for accuracy and intent. The title should help a user distinguish the page, not repeat a mechanical formula across hundreds of locations. Meta descriptions do not guarantee the displayed snippet, but clear copy can strengthen the search proposition.
Check images for descriptive alternatives where they convey information, sensible dimensions, compression and stable layout. Decorative assets should not create screen-reader noise. Video and documents need accessible context and indexable landing pages when they support acquisition.
Validate structured data against Google’s current documentation and the visible page. Eligible markup does not guarantee a rich result. Remove misleading properties, template-wide ratings without basis and types unrelated to the actual content.
Measure real-user performance and usability
Test representative templates on mobile and desktop, including slower devices and networks relevant to the audience. Examine initial server response, render-blocking assets, image delivery, font behaviour, JavaScript work and layout movement. Optimise the bottleneck shown by evidence rather than applying plugins indiscriminately.
Google defines Core Web Vitals around loading performance, interaction responsiveness and visual stability, and recommends evaluating them with real-user field data. Use Search Console groups and available field reports alongside lab diagnostics; lab scores reproduce conditions but do not replace actual-user evidence.
Check usability beyond the metrics. Navigation, readable text, tap targets, intrusive overlays, form behaviour and error recovery affect both customers and conversion. Test essential forms end to end, including confirmation, notification, CRM delivery and spam protection.
Review Nigerian local-search readiness
For location-dependent businesses, verify Google Business Profile ownership, name, address or service area, telephone, category, hours, website destination and branch eligibility. Ensure the linked landing page accurately represents that location and offers useful directions, services, evidence and contact options.
Audit duplicate and obsolete listings. Compare important citations for consistency without chasing every low-quality directory. Review authentic feedback, response governance and the process used to invite customers; never purchase or gate reviews.
Location pages need distinct operational value. Do not swap city names inside identical paragraphs. Explain local service coverage, branch capabilities, access, team, proof and constraints where they truly differ.
Confirm measurement and conversion integrity
Verify Search Console ownership for the correct protocols and domain scope. Test analytics tags, consent behaviour, internal-traffic treatment, cross-domain journeys and key events. Form submissions, calls, WhatsApp clicks, ecommerce transactions and booked consultations need definitions that match the business.
Connect organic acquisition to CRM outcomes where possible. A rise in sessions is weak evidence if enquiries are irrelevant or never answered. Preserve landing page, source and campaign details through qualification, meeting, opportunity and sale.
Inspect conversion pages for message alignment, proof, friction and mobile operation. SEO traffic should land on a page that continues the search promise. Use testing and qualitative feedback to improve the journey rather than adding aggressive pop-ups that obscure the content.
Assess security and migration risks
Confirm HTTPS coverage, certificate validity, mixed content, canonical protocol and secure form submission. Review Search Console security and manual-action reports. Scan for unexpected indexed pages, injected spam, hacked redirects and unauthorised administrators.

Prioritise blockers first, then improvements to high-value pages and scalable templates. Protect existing performance by measuring before and after. Validate fixes through a fresh crawl, live page tests, Search Console evidence and conversion checks—not screenshots of a completed ticket.
