SEO Audit Checklist for Ghanaian Websites
Identify the search barriers worth fixing first and give every recommendation an owner and proof test.
Audit the path from discovery to a real customer action
An SEO audit reveals where a Ghanaian website loses search opportunity: discovery, crawling, rendering, indexing, relevance, usability or conversion. It should distinguish a technical blocker from a content opportunity and a reporting error from an actual commercial decline.
Collect a baseline from Google Search Console, analytics, lead records and important landing pages. Note redesigns, hosting changes, campaigns, outages and seasonal patterns. The audit can then explain evidence in business context rather than presenting isolated scores.
Establish scope and a practical priority model
Inventory the main domain, subdomains, country or language folders, staging sites, applications and third-party booking or payment pages. Identify their owners, access and technology. A forgotten development copy can compete with the live site or expose content that was never approved.
List templates rather than checking only the homepage. Include service, product, category, article, location, search, filter, contact and conversion pages. Sample examples that perform, fail, convert and receive no visibility. Template faults can affect hundreds of URLs even when the sample appears small.
Combine crawler results with Search Console, analytics and manual mobile testing. Use server logs if available, but do not abandon the audit when a smaller organisation lacks them. State the evidence gap and avoid conclusions the available data cannot support.
Score every finding by likely impact, confidence, effort, dependency and commercial relevance. Assign a person and acceptance criterion. This prevents a limited team from spending its month polishing minor metadata while high-value pages remain blocked.
Confirm that search engines can reach the right URLs
Test priority pages for response status, redirects, robots access, robots meta directives, canonical tags, sitemap presence and internal links. Look for 404 errors, soft errors, redirect chains, loops and links pointing to an old domain or non-secure protocol.
Robots.txt regulates crawling rather than serving as a universal indexing-removal tool. Google publishes specifications for page-level robots controls and X-Robots-Tag headers on non-HTML files. Review the current documentation before changing rules, and remember that a crawler may need access to read a noindex directive.
Reconcile the XML sitemap with pages intended for indexation. Remove redirected, duplicate, blocked and error URLs. Include canonical pages and use modification dates only when meaningful changes occur. Submit the appropriate sitemap through Search Console and investigate patterns rather than repeatedly resubmitting an unchanged file.
Use Search Console’s index reports and inspect representative URLs. Google’s URL Inspection tool can show information about the indexed version, the Google-selected canonical and a live test of potential indexability. The live result does not guarantee index inclusion or rankings, so confirm what Google previously indexed and monitor after a fix.
Resolve duplicates created by HTTP and HTTPS, www hostnames, slash conventions, tracking parameters, printer pages or product filters. Redirect or canonicalise according to the page’s real role, then align sitemaps and internal links with the preferred URL.
Check what renders—not only what the editor shows
Compare the raw page source, rendered browser output and Google’s inspected view. Important copy, headings, internal links, structured information and canonicals should remain available after scripts run. Identify resources blocked by robots, JavaScript errors and content injected only after interaction.
Review sliders, tabs, accordions, load-more components and infinite scroll. If deeper products or articles deserve discovery, expose stable links and URLs. A visually smooth interface may still isolate content from search crawlers and keyboard users.
For WordPress and Elementor, inspect frontend output and network activity. Remove unnecessary widgets, fonts, icon libraries, tracking scripts and effects only after confirming their purpose. Test mobile menus, forms, pop-ups and analytics after each optimisation. Combining cache and minification tools without a controlled test can create intermittent breakage.
Simplify architecture and internal linking
Map how somebody moves from the homepage or navigation to important services, products, branches and guides. Search-relevant pages should have a logical parent and receive contextual links. An orphan listed only in the sitemap is difficult for both customers and search engines to interpret.
Review menus, breadcrumbs, category pages, pagination, tag archives and related-content blocks. Use anchors that explain the destination. Remove automated links that connect unrelated pages or repeat the same keyword-heavy phrase everywhere.
Ecommerce filters can generate large numbers of near-duplicate URLs. Identify combinations for which customers genuinely search and create useful maintained landing pages only where warranted. Keep sorts, internal-search states and empty combinations from consuming attention without preventing access to canonical products.
Locate broken links and dead ends. Before merging pages, compare search queries, backlinks, conversions and distinct audience purpose. If a URL is retired, redirect it only to an equivalent replacement. A homepage redirect can confuse users and obscure a genuine removal.
Evaluate content against Ghanaian search needs
Use Search Console queries, customer conversations and manual result review to map intent. A person searching for a price, local provider, definition, comparison or implementation guide expects a different page. Ensure the chosen landing page matches that task.
Review the first screen, explanation, proof, examples, objections, FAQs and call to action. Remove generic passages that delay the useful answer. Add Ghana-specific information where it changes the decision: coverage, delivery, payment route, industry practice, applicable regulation or local service evidence.
Do not create city pages by replacing “Accra” with “Kumasi,” “Tema,” “Takoradi” or “Tamale” inside identical text. A location page should explain actual availability, branch or service model, access, team, relevant proof and contact route. If no meaningful local difference exists, a strong regional page may be more honest.
Check claims and accountability. Show who produced or reviewed the material, cite authoritative sources and date information that can change. Regulated finance, health, legal or data-protection content requires suitable expert review. Remove invented market figures and unprovable leadership claims.
Find pages competing for the same query and purpose. Decide whether to consolidate, differentiate or retain them based on audience need and evidence. Protect the strongest URL during any change and update links and sitemaps accordingly.
Judge usefulness rather than counting words. A concise answer can satisfy a narrow task; a long article may still be repetitive. The correct question is whether a visitor can understand the issue, trust the evidence and take the next appropriate step.
Review search-result presentation
Audit titles and main headings for clarity, uniqueness and truthful differentiation. Avoid templates that leave every page looking the same in results. Write meta descriptions as useful propositions while recognising that search engines may construct other snippets.
Inspect images for size, dimensions, compression and appropriate alternative text. Meaningful images need context; decorative files should not generate noise. Provide an indexable HTML page around important PDFs or videos when they support discovery.
Validate structured data against Google’s current documentation and what users can see. Remove unsupported ratings, incorrect organisation details and types applied merely because a plugin offers them. Correct markup creates eligibility, not a guaranteed rich result.
Test performance on realistic mobile conditions
Review representative templates with field data where available and lab tests for diagnosis. Google’s Core Web Vitals describe real-world loading performance, interaction responsiveness and visual stability. Treat them as part of user experience, not the complete SEO strategy.
Identify slow server response, oversized images, unneeded JavaScript, font delays, render-blocking CSS, layout shifts and third-party tags. Prioritise assets used across many pages. A template fix often creates more value than compressing images one at a time.
Test on common screen sizes and variable connections. Confirm readable text, tap targets, stable menus and a usable path to contact or checkout. A high laboratory score cannot compensate for a form whose submit button fails on a phone.
Audit local search and business listings
Verify legitimate Google Business Profile ownership, name, telephone, address or service area, categories, hours and website destination. Match each eligible location to an accurate landing page. Resolve duplicates, moves and closures through the platform’s approved process.
Check influential local and sector directories for core factual consistency, but do not pursue hundreds of low-quality citations. Review genuine customer feedback, response ownership and the method used to request reviews. Never buy, incentivise or selectively gate public reviews.
Test calls, direction links, forms and WhatsApp actions from the listing and location page. Confirm which employee receives them and how the source is recorded. Visibility without a functioning response route wastes demand.
Validate tracking and lead delivery
Confirm Search Console ownership for the entire domain and important variants. Audit analytics installation, duplicate tags, referral exclusions, ecommerce or key-event logic and cross-domain steps. Compare recorded submissions or orders with the systems that actually received them.
Track commercially meaningful actions rather than every click. Form success, telephone use, WhatsApp initiation, booking and purchase should have clear definitions. Test confirmation pages, email alerts, CRM entry and spam handling end to end.
Preserve organic landing-page and source context through lead review, meeting, opportunity and sale where possible. Report qualified outcomes alongside sessions. If sales never updates dispositions, identify that data gap instead of pretending traffic is revenue.
Check security, maintenance and migration readiness
Verify HTTPS, certificate coverage, mixed content, backups, administrator access, plugin updates and recovery ownership. Review Search Console for security and manual-action messages. Search for unexpected indexed pages, spam titles and suspicious redirects.
Before redesigning or moving the site, inventory current URLs, traffic, queries, links and conversions. Map redirects to equivalent destinations, preserve valuable content and test staging behind proper access control. Monitor crawling, indexation and customer actions after launch, with a documented rollback route.
Convert findings into a manageable work queue
State evidence, affected scope, expected outcome, owner, effort, dependency and pass condition. Label hypotheses as tests rather than facts.
Fix access, security and indexation blockers first. Then improve high-value templates, search intent, internal paths, performance and conversion. Validate every completed item through crawling, live pages, Search Console and real customer actions.
Create a lightweight monitoring cadence for index errors, organic landing pages, mobile experience, lead delivery and major releases. Record deferred decisions and revisit them when evidence or capacity changes. The audit succeeds when important work is implemented and verified.
