App Store Optimisation (ASO) for African Apps: Android & iOS in 2026
If your app is not findable in the Play Store, it doesn’t matter how good it is.
Overview
App Store Optimisation (ASO) is the process of improving your app’s visibility and conversion rate within mobile app stores — primarily Google Play (Android) and Apple App Store (iOS). In Africa, where mobile app adoption is growing rapidly across fintech, e-commerce, health, education and productivity categories, ASO is an underutilised growth channel. Most African app developers invest in user acquisition advertising without optimising the app store listing itself — which is both the first impression and the conversion page for every paid and organic visitor.

Why ASO matters especially in African markets
Platform mix: Device and store usage varies by country, audience and time. Validate the current mix with product analytics and campaign data before allocating creative or acquisition budget. Android may deserve the larger test in many segments, but a valuable iOS audience should not be dismissed from a broad market statistic.
Organic search in the Play Store: Google Play users search for apps to solve specific problems: “send money to Nigeria”, “track expenses in rands”, “learn coding in Ghana”. Apps that rank well for these queries get downloads without paying for them. ASO is the lever that determines whether your app appears in these searches.
Cost of paid acquisition: User acquisition costs through Google UAC (Universal App Campaigns) and Meta mobile install ads are rising in African markets as competition increases. Apps with strong organic discovery from ASO reduce their blended cost-per-install significantly.
The core elements of ASO
App title: Contains your most important keyword naturally. Google Play allows 50 characters; Apple App Store allows 30 characters for the title and 30 characters for a subtitle. Include your primary keyword in the title — it is the strongest ranking signal in both stores.
Short description (Google Play): 80 characters, displayed without expanding. Front-load your primary benefit and key differentiator. This is also a keyword placement opportunity.
Long description (Google Play) / promotional text (App Store): 4,000 characters (Play) / 170 characters (App Store promotional text) of indexable content. Include your primary keyword and related keywords naturally within the first 250 characters. Cover core features, benefits and use cases. For African apps, include country and city names where relevant — “money transfer Nigeria”, “expense tracker South Africa” rank for local intent searches.
Keywords field (App Store only): Apple’s 100-character keyword field is indexed but not displayed. Use all 100 characters with comma-separated keywords — no spaces, no repetition from your title or subtitle, no brand names of competitors.
Screenshots and feature graphic: The most important visual real estate in your listing. Screenshots that show the app in use — with clear labels explaining each screen’s benefit — consistently outperform plain screenshots. Use the first two to three screenshots to communicate your core value proposition, as many users see only these before deciding to download.
App icon: Recognisable at small sizes, distinctive in a list of similar apps. A cluttered or generic icon is a conversion blocker. Test icon designs before committing to one.
Ratings and reviews: High average ratings (4.2+ on Google Play, 4.0+ on App Store) are both a ranking signal and a conversion signal. Proactively prompt satisfied users to leave ratings in-app — triggered by positive events (task completed, milestone reached) rather than on first open. Respond to all reviews (positive and negative) professionally — responses are visible to potential downloaders.
App store localisation for African markets
Google Play and Apple App Store support localised listings by region. For an app targeting Nigerian users, create a Nigeria-specific listing in British English with Nigerian-relevant keywords, pricing references in Naira and screenshots showing the Nigerian context. For a South African app, do the same for South Africa with Rand pricing and South African references.
Many African app developers launch with a single generic English listing and miss the opportunity to rank for country-specific searches. A localised listing for “money transfer Lagos” or “budget app Johannesburg” captures searches that a generic international listing will not.
Connecting ASO to your broader app marketing
ASO affects the decision page used by organic and paid visitors. A clearer listing may improve paid efficiency, but the impact must be measured for the app, market and traffic source. Establish a baseline before scaling acquisition and test one meaningful creative hypothesis at a time.
Your website should include deep links to your app store listing with platform detection (iOS users see App Store link, Android users see Play Store link). Social media content featuring your app should link directly to the store listing with UTM parameters so you can track which social content drives installs.
Build an evidence-led ASO research process
Start with language from support tickets, search campaigns, website queries, reviews and user interviews. Group terms by job to be done rather than producing one undifferentiated keyword list: send money, track spending, book care, learn a skill or manage a team. Record the country, language, user problem, competing results and feature that substantiates each promise.
Inspect store results manually on representative devices and accounts. Results can be personalized, so treat a single observation as directional. Compare the promise, screenshots, review themes, update history and monetisation disclosures of relevant alternatives. Do not copy competitors’ brands or make claims the product cannot demonstrate.
Test the product page, not just metadata
Define one hypothesis per experiment: a benefit-led first screenshot may clarify the app; a localised sequence may answer a country-specific objection; a different icon may improve recognition. Use the store’s current experimentation tools, keep other major variables stable and wait for sufficient evidence rather than declaring a winner from an early fluctuation.
Measure the complete path. Store-page conversion is useful, but retained activation, completed onboarding, subscription or transaction quality matter more. A treatment that attracts more installs but worse-fit users can increase support and acquisition costs. Segment results by store, country and source without over-interpreting small samples.
Localise the proposition, not merely the currency
Localisation includes vocabulary, examples, screenshots, support expectations, privacy disclosures, payment methods and feature availability. Check every image against the current product and ensure any price or promotion is available to the visitor. Use professional review for languages the team cannot evaluate internally.
Coordinate store copy with onboarding. If the listing promises a fast transfer, offline workflow or local support, the first session must make that path visible. Review low-star feedback for expectation gaps, but never pressure or reward users for a positive rating. Use supported review prompts at an appropriate moment and allow users to decline.
Operate ASO as a release discipline
Maintain a change log containing the hypothesis, metadata, assets, countries, release version and measurement window. Recheck links, screenshots, privacy information and support details whenever functionality changes. Monitor crashes, uninstall signals, review topics and customer-service demand alongside visibility and conversion.
ASO cannot repair an unreliable product. Treat repeated complaints about login, payments, performance or account recovery as product priorities before polishing the listing again. The strongest store page makes an accurate promise that the installed experience fulfils.
Give every material listing change a named owner and review date. When a promotion ends, a feature is withdrawn or a policy changes, update the affected metadata and creative promptly. This prevents the store page from becoming a persuasive but inaccurate version of the product.

Questions & Answers
FAQ
How long does it take for ASO changes to affect rankings?
Google Play typically reflects keyword ranking changes within one to two weeks of an update. Apple App Store typically updates indexation within two to four weeks. ASO is not instant — it is a medium-term channel. Expect to see meaningful ranking improvements within four to eight weeks of implementing a comprehensive ASO update, with continued improvement as your download velocity and ratings improve.
Do app ratings affect ASO rankings?
Yes, on both platforms. Apps with higher ratings rank better for equivalent keyword relevance. The velocity of new ratings also matters — apps receiving consistent fresh reviews rank better than apps with old, stagnant review profiles. Implement an in-app rating prompt (using the native iOS SKStoreReviewRequest or Google Play's in-app review API) to generate a steady flow of genuine reviews.
Should I have separate app listings for Nigerian, South African and Ghanaian users?
You cannot create separate listings by country for the same app — your app has one listing per store. But you can localise your listing for specific languages and create country-specific assets. In Google Play Console, use the "Custom store listing" feature to create country-specific descriptions, screenshots and feature graphics. This allows you to show a Nigeria-optimised listing to Nigerian Play Store visitors and a South Africa-optimised listing to South African visitors — a significant ASO advantage most African app publishers miss.
How many keywords should I target in my app listing?
On Apple App Store, you have exactly 100 characters in the keywords field — use all of them. On Google Play, there is no keywords field — keywords are indexed from your title, short description and long description. Research 20–30 relevant search terms, prioritise by volume and relevance, and incorporate naturally into your description. Do not keyword-stuff — unnaturally repeated keywords read poorly to users and are filtered by both stores.
What is the difference between ASO and app advertising?
ASO improves your organic visibility within the app stores and your conversion rate for all incoming traffic. App advertising (Google UAC, Meta mobile install campaigns, TikTok app install ads) drives paid traffic directly to installs. Both are necessary for scaling. ASO should be implemented first — a well-optimised listing converts paid traffic more efficiently, reducing your cost-per-install and improving ROI on advertising spend.
