How website maintenance actually works in Kenya in 2026

Most Kenyan businesses think website maintenance is "I'll deal with it when something breaks." Then their site gets hacked, defaced with casino spam, removed from Google, and they're losing leads for 3 weeks while a developer they barely know tries to clean it up. We've cleaned up dozens of these — every cleanup costs the client more than 12 months of preventive maintenance would have.

At Nelium, we run managed maintenance for around 80 active client sites — WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, custom builds. Below is what proper website maintenance covers and why it's the cheapest insurance most Kenyan SMEs aren't buying.

Backups before everything

Daily off-site backups, retained for at least 30 days, restorable in under an hour. We use UpdraftPlus + S3 (or BackupBuddy + Stash) so backups live somewhere different from your hosting account. The single most common mistake we see — businesses with backups stored only on the same server that got compromised. When the server falls over, the backups go with it.

Updates done carefully, not blindly

WordPress core, themes, and plugins get updated weekly — but not blindly. We test major updates on staging environments first, especially for e-commerce sites where a bad update can break checkout. Auto-updates are configured for security patches; major version updates go through manual review. About 5% of updates per quarter break something somewhere; the staging-first workflow catches them before they hit production.

Security monitoring is layered

Wordfence (or similar WAF), file-integrity monitoring, login-attempt monitoring, malware scanning, automatic IP blocking for brute-force attempts, two-factor authentication for admin accounts, and disabled XML-RPC. Plus Cloudflare in front of the site to absorb most of the noise. The sites we manage average less than 1 successful intrusion per 200 site-years; the unmanaged sites get hit on a 6-month cadence.

Performance regression catching

Sites get slower over time as plugins are added, images uploaded without optimization, and caching configurations drift. Monthly performance checks catch regressions early. We re-optimize image libraries, audit plugin lists for bloat, refresh caching configurations, and document any improvements in the monthly report.

Small content changes — fast turnaround

The "I just need to update the prices on the services page" requests are included up to a couple of hours per month in standard tiers. Most clients use this for monthly content updates, banner swaps, blog publication, and seasonal promotions. Larger projects (new pages, new features) are quoted separately.

How we structure maintenance retainers

Onboarding (week 1)

Audit current state, fix any critical findings, set up backups, monitoring, security, document the site, set up communication channels (email + WhatsApp + ticket system).

Ongoing monthly cadence

Weekly updates, daily backups, continuous monitoring, monthly performance and security report, ad-hoc small changes within retainer hours, emergency response per SLA.

Quarterly health checks

Deeper review every quarter — full security audit, full performance audit, plugin/theme review for upgrade or replacement candidates, recommendations for new improvements.

Frequently asked questions

What's included in monthly website maintenance?

Daily off-site backups, weekly security and plugin updates, monthly performance check (Core Web Vitals, page-load times), malware scanning + cleanup if affected, uptime monitoring with email/SMS alerts, SSL certificate management, monthly small content changes (1–2 hours), and emergency response within agreed SLA. Larger or more complex sites add advanced monitoring and priority support.

How much does website maintenance cost in Kenya?

Standard maintenance retainer (small business sites): KES 8,000–15,000/month. Mid-tier (e-commerce, larger sites with more frequent updates): KES 18,000–35,000/month. Enterprise or high-traffic (advanced monitoring, faster SLAs, larger content allotments): KES 45,000+/month. Pricing scales with traffic, complexity, and SLA requirements.

What if my site gets hacked?

Included in maintenance retainers. We restore from clean backup, identify the entry vector (vulnerable plugin, weak password, compromised hosting), patch the cause, remove malware, request reinclusion in Google Safe Browsing if blacklisted, and provide a written incident report. Most cleanups complete within 4–24 hours.

Can you maintain a site you didn't build?

Yes. About 40% of our maintenance clients have sites built by other agencies or freelancers. We do an initial audit (security, performance, plugin sanity), implement fixes for any critical findings, then onboard onto our standard maintenance workflow. Onboarding fee is KES 25,000–80,000 depending on findings.

What's the response time if my site goes down?

Standard tier: best-effort within 4 business hours. Priority tier: 1 business hour. Enterprise: 30 minutes 24/7. We monitor uptime continuously via UptimeRobot/StatusCake — we usually know about downtime before clients do.
